Reading

Our focus during these first weeks of school center on developing reading expectations and good reading habits in order to build stamina and become independent readers.

We will spend a lot of time learning about the books in our classroom library and school library.

Our overall goal is to develop reading strategies (accuracy), comprehension (understanding), fluency (rate and flow), and expand vocabulary. We use read alouds, mini-lessons, independent practice, and small group instruction to develop these strategies. Benchmark Literacy is the district curricular program that also provides many resources to help reach those goals.

One of the best ways to develop as a reader is to read books that are a “good fit.” Your 2nd grader will learn about how to choose books that are a “good fit” for him/her as a reader—based on the purpose, interest, comprehension level, and readability level. I will help your child as we learn this process, but once in a while your child may choose a book that is not a good fit. This might be a great one to read to him/her!
