Health Services

School health services are managed by the School District nurses. Contact the health room aide at your child’s school with any medical concerns/issues, and they will consult with the school district nurses if needed.  The Oak Creek Health Department nurses manage communicable disease control.  Parents are reminded to promptly report all types of communicable diseases and rashes to their local Health Department.

During the school day, the principal, a secretary, and other staff trained as first responders will be readily available in the schools to provide first aid and immediate and necessary care.

When to Keep Your Child Home

The following are indicators when to keep your child home:

  • Fever over 100.4 degrees
  • Eyes that are red, inflamed, crusty, or glassy. If diagnosed with conjunctivitis (pink eye) may return after 12 hours.
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Frequent and/or hacking cough, sneezing, “running” nose
  • Severe and/or prolonged sore throat; may return 12 hours after the start of antibiotics for Strep.
  • Unusual paleness
  • Persistent pain
  • Generalized rashes
  • Crusting or draining areas on exposed skin (hands, face, etc.)
  • Any contagious disease, head lice, or scabies

Children should be “symptom free” for 24 hours before returning to school. Symptoms include, but are not limited to: fever-free without use of fever-reducing medications, vomiting, and diarrhea. If experiencing diarrhea more than 2 times in a 24-hour period, the child needs to stay home. Must be 24 hours symptom-free to return to school.

Excuses from physical education for an extended period of time will require a medical excuse from the health care provider who is treating your child for this illness or injury.
