Each summer, the OCFSD IT team plays a crucial role in preparing for the upcoming school year by cleaning and repairing thousands of devices. Under the supervision of the District’s IT department, student apprentices work alongside the IT department to get the nearly 8,000 devices ready for the next school year.
According to Chris Bennin, the OCFSD Director of IT, this collaboration represents a unique program within the District. “We are one of the only districts in the state to be an authorized service provider for Acer,” shares Bennin. “This authorization allows the district to handle warranty repairs for Acer devices, generating funds that support the student apprentice program,” Bennin explains.
The student apprenticeship program is designed to provide participating high school students with hands-on experience in IT. Each student apprentice undergoes a rigorous certification process, gaining valuable skills and knowledge that can pave the way for a successful career in IT. This initiative not only benefits the students by preparing them for future careers but also supports the District by ensuring its devices are maintained and ready for the 2024-25 school year.
OCFSD's approach highlights a proactive and innovative strategy to manage its IT infrastructure while investing in the professional development of its students, demonstrating the district living its mission of building successful futures together.
