Students looking at an Oak Creek Fire Truck with a Firefighter and dog mascot

October is Safety Month at the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District! Throughout the month, students participate in a series of age-appropriate lessons designed in collaboration with a team of school psychologists, early childhood teachers, special education teachers, and local law enforcement.

During Fire Prevention Week, the Oak Creek Fire Department will visit all seven of our elementary schools to teach students about fire safety, including what to do if there is an emergency at home. Students will also get to see a fire truck!

Members of the Oak Creek Police Department will be visiting our schools throughout the month to connect with students and reinforce important safety lessons. Some officers may even be spotted in the cafeteria serving lunch!

Students will also learn about SPEAK UP, SPEAK OUT (SUSO) Wisconsin, a program created by the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Office of School Safety. SUSO was created to help keep students safe by offering a comprehensive, one-stop place to turn with safety concerns, including a threat reporting system. Tip lines are used to identify not just threats to schools but also other daily safety concerns.

The Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District remains committed to prioritizing school safety. We are grateful to our community partners, OCPD and OCFD, who share their time, expertise, and commitment to keeping our students safe.
