District News

The health and safety of our students, families, and staff is our top priority in the Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District.  We want the same thing in our schools as we all do in our homes--for our kids to make good, informed choices. Recently, there has been a national conversation about the use of e-cigarettes, or "vaping."  We want to invite you to a local conversation.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarettes, also referred to as e-cigs, vapes, and vape pens, create an aerosol by heating a liquid, usually containing nicotine, flavorings, and other additives. The aerosol is then inhaled into the lungs and can cause damage to the lungs and other parts of the body; when adulterated, these risks can become even more pronounced.

The seriousness of the youth vaping epidemic has prompted us to team up with the Oak Creek Health Department and Oak Creek Police Department to host a vaping awareness event for our families. Dare to Know: The Truth About Vaping, Juuling, and Your Child is a free event designed for parents and students in grades 6-12. The event will take place on Thursday, November 7, 2019, 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm at the Oak Creek Assembly of God, 7311 S. 13th Street in Oak Creek. Childcare will be available. Please see the event flyer for more details, including the event schedule for the evening.

We also have a list of resources for families on the District website, including a tip sheet for parents about talking with their teens about e-cigarettes from the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General.

If you have questions about the Dare to Know event, please contact the Oak Creek Health Department at (414) 766-7950.
